Telematics data is abundant and mostly unused. The models that move cost per kilometre rather than producing dashboards.
Fleets have been collecting telemetry for years and largely converting it into reports nobody reads. The gap between having the data and acting on it is where the value sits.
Predictive maintenance, done honestly
Predicting failure requires failure data, and most fleets have thin, inconsistently coded maintenance records. Start by fixing how failures are recorded; a model trained on 'general fault' codes will predict very little.

Fuel and driving behaviour
Fuel is usually the largest controllable line, and behaviour explains a meaningful share of it. The modelling is not hard; the delivery is. Scores that arrive weekly in a spreadsheet change nothing. Feedback in the cab, in the moment, changes a lot.
Routing that respects reality
Optimal routes that ignore driver hours, loading-bay windows, vehicle restrictions and the fact that a particular customer never accepts deliveries before ten will be ignored by the people who know better. Encode the constraints the dispatchers actually apply, or they will keep overriding you.
Where computer vision pays
Cameras have become cheap enough that the question is what to do with the footage:
- Damage capture at handover, to settle disputes with evidence
- Load verification and pallet counting
- Cargo condition monitoring on temperature-controlled runs
- Distraction and fatigue detection, handled with real care for privacy and consent

The integration is the project
Telematics units, a transport management system, ERP, and a fuel-card provider all disagreeing about what a vehicle is called is the normal starting condition. Budget for reconciliation before modelling.
